DARK MATTER

2023

A coal specimen from an Upper Hunter Valley Mine. The photo is inverted to re-imagine the black, carboniferous material as luminescent and uncanny. It speaks to the lure of mineral resources, light and shadow washing over the toxic dust and dirt.

In this inversion, the work actively participates in its own version of ‘greenwashing’. It calls on us to re-examine our relationship with the environment and consider the optics and aesthetics of that which we consume under the guise of ‘green’. A consideration of our collective responsibility to pursue enduring sustainability to meet our needs for resources and energy.
