TERMINAL VOID (ANTHRACITE)

2023

photopolymer resin
Manufactured in collaboration with Monash Digital Fabrication (dFab) Workshop

Since the introduction of Open Cut/Open Pit mining in the Australian extractive landscape, in the 1980’s, there has been a dramatic change in the relationship of mining to the existing social and natural environment. The previously small mining operations that dotted the area, forming underground networks, have become vast super pits spread across the valley.

This artwork speculates on these volumes of extraction, exploring the spatial qualities of these proliferating voids that appear from the sky as ever expanding. Charting out in suspended space the archipelago of absence they form.
